Area Lakes

Our area is home to three large lakes that offer ample opportunities for living waterfront, with a water view, or with convenient access.

Lake Keowee

Known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery, Lake Keowee covers more than 18,000 acres. It’s a mecca for watersports: boating, fishing, swimming, jet skiing, and more. The lake is 26 miles long and has over 300 miles of shoreline with a mosaic of waterfalls, lovely communities, state parks, and sandy beaches.

Lake Keowee was constructed and is managed by Duke Energy. Two large earthen dams, Keowee Dam and Little River Dam, form the lake, and Jocassee Dam at the northern tip creates Lake Jocassee.

Lake Jocassee

With mountains rising directly from its waters, Lake Jocassee is truly a scenic wonder. The valley where the lake is now located was once home to 4 mighty rivers. The Thompson, Whitewater, Horsepasure, and Toxaway rivers now feed Jocassee to produce a cool and clear reservoir. The lake covers some 7,500 acres and has 75 miles of shoreline.

The lake is surrounded by Jocassee Gorges, an escarpment that marks the dramatic threshold of the Blue Ridge Mountains. National Geographic magazine named Jocassee Gorges one of its 50 “Destinations of a Lifetime,” noting the wilderness location’s “views of spectacular waterfalls and large concentrations of rare plants.” Some 43,000 acres of this unique and diverse land are in a protected management area, ensuring that Lake Jocassee’s natural beauty will remain undisturbed.

If you're visiting the area, Lake Jocassee is a must-see. Visit Jocassee Lake Tours to schedule a boat tour, kayak adventure, or guided hike.

Lake Hartwell

Covering 56,000 acres with 962 miles of shoreline, Lake Hartwell is one of the Southeast’s largest recreational lakes. It was built and is now managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Numerous public parks, marinas, and campgrounds make the lake a popular vacation destination. Fed by the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca rivers, Lake Hartwell is located in both South Carolina and Georgia.
